Killer Couple Arrested For Brutal Murder Of Doctor William Mputhi Appear In Court

A 34-year-old couple accused of the brutal murder of Shakas Head resident Dr William Mputhi has been remanded in custody for seven days. The pair appeared in the Kwadukuza Magistrates Court today (Wednesday) after a dramatic arrest on Monday.

Reaction Unit officials moved swiftly on a tip-off that the couple and their three-year-old child were attempting to flee to Richards Bay and were hiding at a home in Shakaskraal. Officers secured exit points while a team moved in to make the arrest.

The female suspect was apprehended first. “She clutched onto her baby and pleaded with Reaction Officers to allow her to leave, denying any involvement in the murder,” according to RUSA reports.

Her husband was discovered hiding under a pile of clothing just 1.5 meters away from officers. He attempted to flee but was forcefully restrained.

Murdered in Front of His Child and Witnesses

The couple is accused of murdering Dr William Mputhi, 33, in a horrifically violent attack. Reports state the murder occurred in the presence of Mputhi’s six-year-old daughter and approximately fifteen other witnesses.

The assailants allegedly stabbed and repeatedly hacked at Mputhi with a bloodied dagger and a sickle before fleeing the scene. The victim succumbed to his injuries before any medical assistance could arrive.

Further investigations revealed the couple’s intended escape plan. RUSA learned they were headed to Richards Bay, where the female suspect has another child from a previous relationship living with extended family.

Disturbingly, families contacted RUSA headquarters to report that the woman had “abandoned three other children living in different KZN towns.”

In court, the couple was offered and opted for state-provided legal aid attorneys by the presiding magistrate. The accused are scheduled to appear again in court on September 10, 2025.
