Kidnapped Victim Rescued As Three Suspects Arrested In Ekurhuleni Police Operation

A coordinated law enforcement operation has led to the safe rescue of a kidnapping victim and the arrest of three suspects in Ekurhuleni. Officers also recovered the victim’s hijacked vehicle, an unlicensed firearm, bank cards and property believed to have been bought using stolen money. The suspects are expected to appear in court on multiple charges.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison Unit, working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), after reports of a kidnapping between Greenstone and London Road.

Ekurhuleni Kidnapping Victim Found Safe After Multi-Agency Operation

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said officers responded to the incident at about 11am after receiving information from a vehicle tracking company.

“At approximately 11am, officers responded to a reported kidnapping between Greenstone and London Road. Acting on coordinates received from a tracking company, members recovered the victim’s vehicle in Alexandra Township, while the search for the victim continued.”

Investigators then worked with a banking-sector kidnapping response team after establishing that the suspects were allegedly using the victim’s bank accounts to make fraudulent purchases at a shopping mall in Alexandra.

Police moved in and arrested two suspects who were allegedly using the victim’s cellphone to complete transactions worth about R45,000.

Thepa said officers also recovered the keys to the hijacked vehicle from the suspects.

Police Recover Stolen Goods And Unlicensed Firearm In Alexandra

Information gathered from the arrested suspects led officers to a property on Thoko Nomgoma Street in East Bank.

“A brief interrogation led Officers to a residence on Thoko Nomgoma Street in East Bank. A search of the premises resulted in the arrest of a third suspect. Officers recovered several boxes of expensive footwear, clothing and other items believed to have been purchased using the victim’s stolen funds.”

During the search, officers also recovered a black Norinco firearm with a defaced serial number, as well as ammunition.

Three Suspects Face Kidnapping And Hijacking Charges In Ekurhuleni

Roughly 20 minutes after the third arrest, officers located the kidnapped victim at a garage in the Lombardy area. The victim was found unharmed.

“Approximately 20 minutes later, the kidnapped victim was found unharmed at a garage in the Lombardy area.

“The three suspects, in their early twenties, were detained at Alexandra Police Station and will face charges of kidnapping, hijacking, extortion, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition,” Thepa said.

The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the relevant Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
