Kidnapped Indian Businessman Rescued In Alexandra After Police Shootout With Notorious Kingpin “Dollarman”

Police Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has safely reunited an Indian businessman with his family following a dramatic midnight rescue in Alexandra. The victim was discovered in a shack shortly after midnight on Thursday, 4 September 2025.
His rescue came just hours after an armed confrontation between police and the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping.
Shootout Ends in Death of Kidnapping Kingpin
On Wednesday evening, police tracked the suspect near the R21 in Kempton Park. A gunfight broke out, leaving the alleged kingpin—known by the nickname “Dollarman”—fatally wounded.
According to authorities, “Dollarman” was a notorious figure on both sides of the border. He was listed on Mozambique’s wanted persons database, SERNIC, for multiple kidnapping-for-ransom cases.
In South Africa, he was also linked to at least five kidnappings as well as crimes including housebreaking, carjacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Police Crack Down on Kidnapping Syndicates
SAPS highlighted the growing success of its Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, which since July 2021 has arrested more than 337 suspected kidnappers and seized over 146 illegal firearms.
Just in the past week, during Operation Shanela, police arrested more than 14,773 suspects nationwide for serious crimes ranging from murder to rape, while confiscating at least 163 illegal firearms.

Police say these results demonstrate their ongoing commitment to dismantling kidnapping syndicates and tackling violent crime.
