Khuzani Mpungose Withdraws From Joseph Shabalala Tribute Concert After Family Court Battle

Maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose has dramatically pulled out of the highly anticipated African Icons Tribute Concert just hours before showtime.

The concert, held in honour of Joseph Shabalala, founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has been clouded by family disputes and a last-minute legal battle.

The event, organised by Lebohang “Lebo M” Morake and Till Dawn Productions, is taking place at the Durban Playhouse to celebrate Shabalala’s legacy in shaping South African music. But the late icon’s family claims they were sidelined, sparking tensions behind the scenes.

Shabalala Family’s Legal Bid Dismissed

Widow Thokozile Shabalala attempted to stop the concert through an urgent Johannesburg High Court application, citing exclusion from the planning. “There was no communication between me and the organiser. I have never met him, and I don’t even know him,” she told reporters.

Her bid was dismissed with costs, as the judge ruled the show should continue. Despite her objections, Shabalala’s son Nkosinathi Shabalala, who co-produced the event alongside Lebo M, insisted: “My father’s legacy belongs to the people. Not to those who seek to misuse his name for personal agendas.”

Khuzani’s Last-Minute Exit Shocks Fans

Following heated meetings with the Shabalala family and elders, Khuzani Mpungose announced he would not perform at the concert. He explained:

“I would like to sincerely apologise for not being able to attend the upcoming event. Following the advice of my elders, I have been asked not to participate due to family-related concerns surrounding the event.”

He also offered to refund the full R57,500 performance fee, saying he wanted to avoid any financial loss to organisers. “This was a challenging decision as I value both the organiser’s relationship and the effort invested in this event.”

Despite the drama, publicity manager Simphiwe Majola and Lebo M confirmed: “The show must go on.”
