Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said members of the provincial combat team attempted to pull the vehicle over on Japhta K Masemola Road.
“Provincial combat team members were following information about suspects involved in the extortion of businesses in the area when a vehicle with occupants fitting the description was spotted,” Potelwa said.
However, the situation escalated rapidly when the occupants allegedly refused to stop.
“The occupants of the vehicle pulled out firearms and pointed at the police,” she said.
Officers responded to the threat, resulting in all four suspects being fatally wounded.
“As a consequence, four yet-to-be identified males were shot and killed,” Potelwa confirmed.
Three firearms believed to belong to the suspects were recovered at the scene.
Extortion Violence Under Spotlight After Separate Mass Shooting
The incident comes amid growing concern over extortion-related violence in Khayelitsha. Earlier this month, four people were killed when gunmen opened fire on patrons watching a soccer match.
Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said preliminary investigations suggest the venue may have been operating as an illegal liquor outlet, with extortion believed to be a possible motive.
