Kharishma Earns Double SAMA Nominations Just Days After Surviving Tragic Car Crash

Limpopo-born music sensation Kharishma, real name Melita Makoma Ribane, has scored not one but two nominations at the upcoming 31st South African Music Awards (SAMAs) — just days after surviving a deadly car accident that left fans in shock.

The Lekompo hitmaker is nominated for Record of the Year and Music Video of the Year for her smash single Chokeslem, which continues to dominate Mzansi’s airwaves. The recognition couldn’t have come at a more emotional time for the rising star.

Kharishma was involved in a fatal car crash on 31 October at the intersection of Grobler and Magazyn Street — a devastating incident that claimed the life of one of her close friends and left her hospitalised.

Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying:

“The accident has unfortunately claimed the life of one of Kharishma’s friends, leaving the other severely injured, including Kharishma.”

They added:

“We thank everyone who has sent well wishes and shown us support during this difficult time.”

Chokeslem Keeps Winning Despite Tragedy

Even as she recovers, Kharishma’s chart-topping single Chokeslem shows no signs of slowing down. The track previously snatched Song of the Year honours on both Thobela FM and Capricorn FM, and now it’s set to make more waves at the SAMAs 2025.
