Murdered Kgaogelo Marota Had Protection Order Against Abusive Ex-Boyfriend

Friends of 20-year-old Kgaogelo Marota are mourning her death, revealing she had endured a violent relationship with her ex-boyfriend.
Marota was tragically stabbed to death in Maubane, North West, in an attack allegedly carried out by her ex, Lazarus Antonio. Authorities say Antonio not only killed Marota but also posted video footage of the gruesome scene on his social media accounts.
Just hours after Marota’s murder, Antonio allegedly attacked his current girlfriend, leaving her injured and hospitalised.
Protection Order Failed to Prevent Antonio From Killing Kgaogelo Marota
Katlego Magwae, a close friend of Marota, confirmed that the young woman had a protection order against Antonio due to prior incidents of violence. Magwae recalled Marota confiding in her about the abuse:
“Initially, he showed her love until a certain point, and he changed and became abusive towards her. She would come to me, telling me that he carries weapons and would force her to do things she did not want to do.”
Despite legal measures, the protection order could not prevent the deadly outcome, highlighting gaps in domestic violence prevention.
