Kenny Kunene Calls For National Task Team To Tackle Deadly Taxi Violence

City of Johannesburg’s Transport MMC, Kenny Kunene, has urged the government to set up a dedicated task team to investigate the escalating murders in South Africa’s taxi industry.

Kunene made the appeal during the funeral service of slain taxi boss Molefe Victor Moekeletsi, held in Midrand on Saturday.

Moekeletsi, aged 52, was the chairperson of the Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and Sandton Taxi Association (ARMSTA).

He was fatally shot in Marlboro, north of Johannesburg, last week, alongside one of his bodyguards. Another bodyguard and a passing motorist were also injured during the attack.

Kenny Kunene Pushes for a Special Taxi Killings Unit

Addressing mourners at the service, which was streamed live on social media, Kunene said it was time for the government to act decisively against taxi-related murders. He proposed a dedicated unit similar to the political killings task team in KwaZulu-Natal to tackle the crisis.

“The biggest problem is you never see arrests when taxi people are killed. But when politicians are killed, they use the power that they have to commit resources to protect themselves,” Kunene said.

“The taxi industry is a very important stakeholder, especially in the transport department, in the economy of our country, because transport drives the economy of any country.”

Community Mourns a Respected Taxi Leader

Moekeletsi’s death has once again drawn attention to the ongoing violence plaguing the taxi industry, which has claimed numerous lives across the country.

He was laid to rest at the Fourways Memorial Park, where family, colleagues and community members paid tribute to his leadership and contribution to the sector.
