UPDATE | Kaya 959 Fires Sol Phenduka After Misogynistic Remarks About Minnie Dlamini Spark Backlash

Kaya 959 has officially cut ties with radio host Sol Phenduka, just days after his shocking suspension. The Johannesburg-based station confirmed the termination of his contract, citing “unacceptable” comments he made on the popular MacG Vodcast.

In a strongly worded statement, the station said:

“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast, where Sol Phenduka is an integral part of the presenting team. Misogynistic remarks made about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women.

“As a content provider of our flagship breakfast show, his alignment with comments made on the vodcast does not reflect who we are as a station, nor what our listeners expect of us.”

Station Stands Firm on Values

Acting Managing Executive Dave Tiltmann emphasised that the station would not overlook behaviour that undermines its values or reputation.

“Kaya 959 cannot ignore conduct that damages our integrity as a brand,” Tiltmann explained.

The decision to fire Phenduka wasn’t just about public image—it was also a contractual violation. Tiltmann revealed that Phenduka had given written assurance to management in June 2023, promising such conduct would not happen again.

“Trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity are the foundations of Kaya 959. They guide everything we do on air, online and off air. We are answerable to our listeners, and when conduct falls short, we act decisively,” he said.

His latest remarks were deemed a direct breach of his Independent Contract, leaving Kaya with no choice but to act decisively.

Phenduka’s departure leaves Kaya’s flagship breakfast show in transition. The station has yet to announce who will step in, but industry insiders say the move signals Kaya’s determination to uphold its values and protect its reputation in the entertainment industry.
