Kareedouw Guesthouse Owner Kevin Pretorius Sentenced To 10 Years For Carbon Monoxide Deaths Of Couple

A Kareedouw guesthouse owner has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of murdering two guests who died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Kevin Pretorius was sentenced in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Friday, nearly six years after Mari Hoon, 28, and her fiancé, Jean Vosloo, 25, were discovered dead in a bathroom at his establishment.

The couple died in April 2020 while staying at Pretorius’ guesthouse. They were found naked and unresponsive in the shower.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Confirmed by Toxicology Reports

Toxicology tests later confirmed that the pair succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

During court proceedings, evidence revealed that a gas geyser installed in the bathroom lacked a flue pipe to vent hazardous gases outside. As a result, carbon monoxide accumulated inside the enclosed space.

The court heard that the absence of proper ventilation created a dangerous environment, ultimately leading to the couple’s deaths.

Magistrate Vusiwe Mnyani Hands Down Concurrent 10-Year Sentence

Vusiwe Mnyani sentenced Pretorius to 10 years’ imprisonment on each count of murder. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve an effective 10-year jail term.

In delivering judgment, Mnyani said there was no clear indication that Pretorius had shown genuine remorse.

The sentencing brings to a close a case that has remained before the courts for nearly six years, following the tragic deaths that shocked the Kareedouw community.
