Family Of Kamogelo Matora Demands Apology From Killer, Lazarus Antonio’s Family

The family of 20-year-old Kamogelo Matora, who was brutally stabbed to death in Maubane, North West, says they are still waiting for a formal apology from the family of the man who killed her.

The suspect, 26-year-old Lazarus Antonio, was arrested last Friday after sharing a shocking video on social media, showing the scene of the crime where Matora’s lifeless body was found and stating the reason for killing her.

Speaking about the silence from Antonio’s relatives, Kamogelo Matora’s father, Thabiso Seema, said: “No one from his family has said anything. They never even called and said we are sorry as the family.”

Court Appearance and Community Outrage

Antonio, who goes by the Facebook name Mfana Ngwenya, appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of murder and attempted murder. According to police, he also stabbed his current girlfriend on the same day. She survived the attack and remains hospitalised.

During his court appearance, Antonio claimed that he was assaulted by police during his arrest. The matter has been postponed to 5 September, when he is expected to apply for bail.

Outside the Temba Magistrate’s Court, community members gathered in protest, voicing their anger and demanding justice.

The case has reignited public concern over gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, with gender activist Vicky Lamula expressing outrage at the attack, saying:

“We are not going to play with people that kill, people that think that GBV is something to play with. We are very angry as a community, we are not going to stand for this.”

The community has vowed to continue pushing for justice as the case unfolds.
