Kabelo Gwamanda Discusses His Arrest And Challenges Of Being Black In South Africa

Former Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Kabelo Gwamanda, has recently made headlines following his arrest related to alleged funeral policy fraud. Gwamanda, who also served as the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, addressed the issue in a candid video shared on his X page.
Gwamanda On Challenges Of Being Black
Speaking to an unidentified interviewer, Gwamanda reflected on the societal implications of growing up black in South Africa, stating, “it’s a possibility that none of us can avoid.”

He emphasized that regardless of career choices—be it public service or otherwise—the fear of arrest is a persistent reality for many in the black community. Gwamanda highlighted the critical need for a better understanding between South Africans and law enforcement institutions.
“The fact of the matter is that the relationship that South Africans have with law enforcement is a relationship that needs to be worked on very strongly, so that we understand what each of our roles are in this undertaking.”
Concerns for the Community
Amidst his personal challenges, Gwamanda took the opportunity to caution Joburg residents about severe weather conditions impacting the city.

He expressed his gratitude to the community and urged citizens to prioritize safety, especially with the heavy rains affecting Gauteng and nearby areas. “But I am here at home. I cannot swim, there is a storm coming in the City of Johannesburg. Thank you very much,” said the former executive mayor.
