Justice Minister Kubayi Demands Urgent SAPS Briefing Over Mthethwa’s Death

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has urgently requested a meeting with senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officials to discuss the circumstances surrounding the death of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa.

Mthethwa, 58, passed away last week while staying at a hotel in Paris. French authorities, alongside a special team from SAPS, are continuing investigations into his death.

A delegation of five senior SAPS officers has been dispatched to France to assist local police with the investigation.

According to preliminary findings and hotel surveillance footage, there were no signs of foul play. The footage reportedly shows only Mthethwa entering the room where he was later found.

The Mthethwa family confirmed that they have been briefed on the developments and are awaiting the final findings from authorities in France and South Africa.

Kubayi Calls for Transparency and Swift Action

The Department of Justice stated that Minister Kubayi’s meeting with SAPS leadership aims to clarify the formal request for assistance and ensure that all investigative processes remain transparent and thorough.

“The priority remains uncovering the truth behind Mthethwa’s death,” the department added, noting that the repatriation of his body will proceed according to standard diplomatic protocols.
