EMPD Corruption Scandal: Julius Mkhwanazi Arrested In Early Morning Raid

A senior official linked to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has been taken into custody as part of an expanding corruption investigation. Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi was arrested on Saturday by the South African Police Service Madlanga Task Team at his home in Gauteng.

Police confirmed that a 50-year-old municipal official is facing charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice.

SAPS Madlanga Task Team Targets EMPD Corruption Allegations

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the arrest forms part of a wider probe into alleged wrongdoing within the EMPD.

“The SAPS’ Madlanga Task Team has arrested a 50-year-old senior municipal official for fraud, corruption and defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice,” she said.

Authorities indicated that investigations are ongoing, with additional arrests expected as the task team continues to pursue other individuals linked to the case.

“The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case,” Mathe added.

Mounting Pressure At Madlanga Commission Preceded Julius Mkhwanazi Arrest

The development follows a difficult week for Mkhwanazi at the Madlanga Commission, where his testimony came under intense scrutiny. Questioning during proceedings highlighted inconsistencies, missing documentation and allegations of criminal conduct within a police unit.

Police have declined to elaborate further on the specifics of the case, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation.

“These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD),” said Mathe.

“No further comment will be provided on the merits of the case at this stage.”

Mkhwanazi is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 April 2026, where the case is likely to proceed.

The investigation remains active as authorities continue to examine the extent of alleged corruption within the metro police department.
