Julius Malema To Appeal Guilty Verdict In Firearm Discharge Case

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has confirmed he will appeal a court ruling that found him guilty of unlawfully discharging a firearm.

The East London Magistrate’s Court delivered the verdict on Wednesday morning, convicting Malema under the Firearms Control Act.

The charges stem from a 2018 rally in Mdantsane, where Malema allegedly fired shots into the air near a crowd of thousands.

Bodyguard Acquitted Of All Charges

Malema’s co-accused, bodyguard Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted of all charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The judgment leaves Malema to face sentencing alone.

Malema Vows Stronger Legal Fight

Rejecting the ruling, Malema described the court’s decision as flawed and said his legal team will reinforce its efforts ahead of the appeal.

“As we walk forward, we are going to reinforce that legal team, we’ll bring Advocate Ngcukaitobi as we go into the appeal and strengthen our case because it is now beyond all of us.

“We need to strengthen our team and confront this system and you need lawyers who are not scared.”

Malema is scheduled to return to court in January 2026 for sentencing.
