Julius Malema Awaits Judgment In Firearms Case At East London Magistrates Court

Day three of EFF leader Julius Malema’s appearance at the East London Magistrates Court takes centre stage on Wednesday morning as the court prepares to hand down judgment in his firearms discharge case.

Malema is accused of contravening sections of the Firearms Control Act, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The charges stem from a 2018 rally in Mdantsane, where he allegedly fired shots into the air before a massive crowd of supporters.

For the past two days, presiding Magistrate Twanet Olivier meticulously reviewed the testimonies of witnesses and the exhibits presented during the trial.

That process concluded on Tuesday, with Olivier confirming that the next step is the court’s evaluation and formal findings.

“Yesterday and today dealt with the summarising of the entire case, including all the exhibits and that consumed two days. What is left is the evaluation and the findings. I cannot see that it will be more than two and a half hours,” Olivier explained.

Julius Malema Maintains His Innocence

While the drawn-out judgment process left some EFF members frustrated, Olivier stressed that thorough reflection on all evidence was essential before a ruling could be made.

Malema, however, continues to deny the allegations. He insists the firearm he used during the rally was a toy gun with no live rounds of ammunition.

The court is expected to reveal its decision later today.
