Judgment Set For Julius Malema’s Firearm Discharge Trial In East London Court

The East London Magistrate’s Court is expected to hand down judgment on Monday morning in the high-profile firearms discharge trial involving Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

Malema and his personal protector, Adriaan Snyman, face charges under the Firearms Control Act, including the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Julius Malema’s Charges Linked to 2016 EFF Rally

The case dates back to the EFF’s 5th anniversary celebration in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, seven years ago. A video from the rally allegedly showed Malema firing a rifle in front of a large crowd. Snyman is accused of handing the weapon to him moments before the incident.

Both men pleaded not guilty. Malema has maintained that the item he handled was not a real firearm but a replica that contained no live ammunition.

In court, Malema testified: “Any object without live rounds cannot be considered a firearm, and therefore I did not contravene the Firearms Control Act.”

He further argued that no one at the rally reacted in alarm, which he said proved that the weapon was merely a prop.

The East London Magistrate’s Court will deliver its long-awaited ruling on the matter on Monday morning.
