Judgment Day For Mashatile’s VIP Protection Officers In N1 Assault Case

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court, north of Johannesburg, will on Thursday deliver judgment in the case involving eight former members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP Protection Unit.

The officers, each out on R10 000 bail, had filed an application seeking to have the charges against them withdrawn.

This case follows a viral video that surfaced in July 2023, allegedly showing the officers assaulting the occupants of a VW Polo on the N1 highway in Johannesburg.

The video, which sparked widespread outrage, appeared to show the VIP Protection officers brandishing rifles and physically attacking trainee soldiers travelling in the vehicle.

According to the victims, the accused allegedly forced them to the roadside, smashed their car window, and proceeded to assault them while pointing firearms at them.

Charges Facing Mashatile’s Former Protection Officers

All eight officers face multiple charges, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving, malicious damage to property, and obstruction of justice.

The court’s judgment is expected to determine whether the officers will stand trial or walk free from the high-profile case that has drawn national attention.
