Joshlin Smith’s Trial Resumes After Sudden Recess Due To Accused Mother’s Illness

The trial of missing Joshlin Smith resumed on Thursday, March 28, after a brief recess when accused mother, Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, fell ill in court.

The trial had been halted at around 10 am when Kelly reportedly felt nauseous and was about to throw up.

The court adjourned for a short time and resumed proceedings at 12 pm, with the presiding officer, Judge Nathan Erasmus, notifying the court of the delay.

Accused And Co-Accused Plead Guilty To Kidnapping And Human Trafficking

Kelly, along with her co-accused Jacquen ‘Boeta’ Appollis and Steveno ‘Steffie’ van Rhyn, is facing charges of kidnapping and human trafficking in connection with the disappearance of Joshlin Smith.

Joshlin went missing from her Middelpos home on February 19, 2024.

All three accused have pleaded guilty. The State’s key witness, Lourentia Lombaard, has already been on the stand for nine days, providing testimony that has contradicted the statements of Kelly, Boeta, and Joshlin’s brother regarding Joshlin’s whereabouts.

Contradictions In Statements Regarding Joshlin’s Disappearance

Investigating officer Captain Wesley Lombard disclosed significant inconsistencies in the testimonies of the accused.

Kelly claimed she left for work at 9 am, leaving Joshlin and her brother with Boeta, but returned at 1:50 pm to find Boeta absent and two children at home.

Boeta, however, gave a different account, saying Kelly briefly returned at 11 am and left again.

He also said Joshlin got upset, walked away at 2 pm, and was never seen again.

Lombard pointed out these discrepancies, as the statements failed to align with each other, raising questions about what really happened to Joshlin.

The trial is ongoing, with further developments expected as the investigation into Joshlin’s disappearance continues.
