Appollis alleges that he was brutally assaulted and psychologically manipulated by police during interrogations, leading to a trial-within-a-trial to determine the admissibility of his confession in the Joshlin case.

The Joshlin trial is being held at the Western Cape High Court, sitting at the White City Multipurpose Centre in Diazville, Saldanha Bay.

He also alleges police suffocated him with a plastic bag and forced him to implicate others.

However, police officers deny these allegations, stating Appollis already had injuries when he arrived at the Sea Border offices.

State prosecutor Aradhana Heeramun has questioned the validity of Appollis’ claims, pointing out inconsistencies in his testimony and the J88 medical report.

Joshlin CaseTrial’s Progress

The trial is expected to conclude the trial-within-a-trial soon, allowing the main trial to proceed.

Judge Nathan Erasmus has expressed a desire to finalize this process, enabling the court to focus on the kidnapping and human trafficking charges against Appollis, Steveno ‘Steffie’ van Rhyn, and Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith.

The court has heard testimony from various witnesses, including Lourentia Lombaard, a former accused turned state witness, and Detective Captain Wesley Lombard, who detailed his investigation into Joshlin’s disappearance.
