The trial of six-year-old Joshlin Smith’s kidnapping took an unexpected turn on Friday when the cross-examination of a key witness was delayed.

Steveno van Rhyn, one of the accused, allegedly made a confession on March 5, 2024, which was captured on video footage.

However, his attorney, Nobahle Mkabayi, requested time to consult with her client regarding the footage, prompting the delay.

Torture Allegations Surface

The proceedings has been marred by allegations of police brutality, with Van Rhyn and co-accused Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis claiming they were tortured and assaulted by police officials at the Saldanha Sea Border offices on March 4, 2024.

Dr. Hendrik Nel testified that Van Rhyn had injuries consistent with a fall from a bakkie, including soft tissue injuries and a possible hemarthrosis.

Joshlin’s mother, Raquel “Kelly” Smith, returned to the dock after being absent due to medical treatment.
