Joshlin Smith Case: Injured Mother Escorted From Court Amid Emotional Outburst

Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, the mother of missing six-year-old Joshlin Smith, was escorted from the Western Cape High Court on Thursday after arriving with a noticeable bump on her forehead.

The injury was reportedly sustained during transportation from the Langebaan police station to the court, as she remains in custody during the ongoing trial.

The courtroom, currently sitting at the White City Multipurpose Centre in Diazville, Saldanha Bay, observed a visibly emotional Kelly Smith.

Initially seen pouting, smiling, and posing for photographers, her demeanor quickly shifted to tears, prompting court orderlies to remove her quietly from the proceedings.

Medical Treatment Delays Court Attendance

Following a lunch adjournment, presiding Judge Nathan Erasmus addressed the court, confirming that Smith had received medical treatment earlier in the day, which caused a delay in her court appearance.

“Ms Smith, I have spoken to your lawyer and an arrangement was made for you,” Judge Erasmus told her in open court.

This marks another instance of Kelly Smith requiring medical attention during the trial.

Just a week earlier, she was rushed out of court and treated in a back room, only to return to court the following day.

Smith Faces Kidnapping And Human Trafficking Charges

Smith, along with her boyfriend Jacquen ‘Boeta’ Appollis and their friend Steveno ‘Steffie’ van Rhyn, is facing serious charges of kidnapping and human trafficking.

The trio was arrested in March 2024, two weeks after Joshlin Smith disappeared from her Saldanha Bay home on 19 February.

While a trial-within-a-trial is currently underway to investigate claims by the co-accused that they were tortured into confessing, Kelly Smith is not involved in this aspect.

Notably, she has not alleged any assault during her arrest on 5 March.
