Johannesburg Residents Rally Against Severe Water Shortages: “We Have No Clean Water”

Frustrated Johannesburg residents have taken to the streets to protest the city’s worsening water supply crisis, which has left many communities without access to clean or consistent water for weeks — and in some areas, months.

Gathering outside the Johannesburg Council Chambers, residents held up placards voicing their anger and desperation, demanding immediate action from city officials.

Civic movements and community groups have united to amplify their concerns, urging the metro to prioritise resolving the escalating water issues affecting daily life.

Protesters say they’ve been forced to live under unbearable conditions, with many unable to cook, clean, or even drink safe water. For some, taps have run completely dry.

Burst Pipes and Blame: Residents Demand Accountability

Zintle Tyuku, a member of the civic movement Amandla.mobi, criticised the city for neglecting infrastructure while blaming residents for the crisis.

“You go around Johannesburg, you see pipes that have burst, clean water gushing out, and yet the narrative that the city is pushing is that communities are wasting water. They are the ones that are wasting water,” Tyuku said.

She added that the problem extends beyond isolated communities, saying it’s a citywide issue that affects everyone living in Johannesburg.

Civic Movements Unite for Change

Community organisations are calling for transparent communication from the metro and urgent repairs to critical infrastructure.

Residents have vowed to continue protesting until their concerns are addressed and sustainable water solutions are implemented.
