Johannesburg Police Dismantle Illegal Distillery In Hekpoort

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the Hawks have successfully dismantled an illegal distillery in Hekpoort, west of Johannesburg.

The joint operation, which took place on a recent Wednesday, was initiated based on a credible tip-off. The officers’ swift and coordinated action resulted in the confiscation of substantial assets and the arrest of a key suspect involved in the illegal activities.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said a total of R570,000 in cash was seized, along with machinery and alcohol estimated to be worth R20 million.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was apprehended and is currently detained at the Hartbeespoortdam police station. Fihla elaborated on the discovery, stating, “Upon arrival at the premises, officers were met by a 45-year-old man who claimed to be the manager and shareholder of the business.

A subsequent search of the property uncovered a sophisticated operation producing whiskey, brandy, gin, and vodka, including counterfeit labels and packaging.”

This operation represents a significant blow to the illicit alcohol trade in the region. Fihla emphasized the importance of such actions in combating organized crime, noting that, “[This operation] highlights JMPD’s commitment to combating organized crime. We will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to disrupt criminal activities and protect the public.”
