Johannesburg Police Arrest Four After 4,000 Stolen SIM Cards Found On M1 South

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers made a major seizure on the evening of 7 October after stopping a white BMW 1 Series travelling without number plates near Xavier Street on the M1 South. The vehicle was also operating with a fraudulent temporary permit.

During the routine check, officers discovered a large plastic bag containing more than 4,000 allegedly stolen MTN SIM cards. A device believed to be either a signal jammer or a SIM card registration machine was also recovered.

Four Men Detained Following Discovery in Johannesburg

The four male suspects, aged between 29 and 30, were immediately arrested at the scene. All evidence, including the SIM cards and the suspicious device, has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Booysens for the opening of a formal case.

The BMW used in the incident has been impounded at the Lenasia SAPS vehicle pound, pending further verification.

Commenting on the arrest, the JMPD highlighted the operation as part of their ongoing initiative to curb criminal activity in Johannesburg.

“The successful interception underscores our commitment to safeguarding essential communication networks,” the department stated, stressing the significance of protecting the city’s telecommunication infrastructure.
