Johannesburg High Court To Hear Update On ‘Cat’ Matlala’s Prison Transfer Bid

The case involving alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala returns to the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday morning, where judges are expected to receive an update on his request to be transferred from the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility.

Matlala, alongside his wife Tsakane and three co-accused, is facing 25 charges connected to three alleged failed hit attempts between August 2022 and January 2024.

One of the attempted murder charges relates to an alleged plot targeting Matlala’s former partner, socialite Tebogo Thobejane.

During his previous appearance, Matlala’s legal team informed the court that he may lodge another bail application based on new facts. If submitted, it would mark his third attempt to secure release.

Matlala’s Prison Transfer Bid Under Scrutiny

Central to Thursday’s proceedings is Matlala’s bid to be moved from the high-security eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility in Kokstad.

His lawyers have raised concerns about the impact of his incarceration there, particularly regarding consultations and preparation for his defence. The court is expected to hear further details on this matter.

The supermax facility is known for its stringent security measures, which the defence argues have implications for access and legal communication.

Possible Third Bail Application and Trial Readiness Update

In addition to the transfer request, the court will consider developments around a potential new bail application.

The embattled businessman’s lawyers previously indicated that fresh facts could form the basis of another attempt to secure bail. Any such application would follow two earlier unsuccessful bids.

The High Court will also receive an update on trial readiness for Matlala’s co-accused. They include alleged hitmen Musa Kekana and Tiego Mabusela, as well as Mabusela’s daughter, Nthabiseng Nzama, and Tsakane.

The matter continues to draw attention as proceedings unfold in one of the region’s most closely watched criminal cases.
