Joe ‘Ferrari’ Sibanyoni Extortion Case Re-Enrolled Ahead Of Delmas Court Appearance

The National Prosecuting Authority has re-enrolled the extortion and money laundering case against Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and three co-accused.

The matter is expected to be heard in the Delmas Magistrates Court on Thursday after the case was previously struck off the roll in the Kgwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court.

The NPA said the decision to move the matter was linked to security concerns involving the state prosecutor handling the case.

NPA Explains Move To Delmas Court

Speaking on the sidelines of an Electoral Commission of South Africa event in Midrand on Wednesday, NPA head Andy Mothibi defended the decision to transfer the matter.

“We do decide, from time to time, for matters to be heard even in different jurisdictions after making considerations either of safety or of expediency,” Mothibi said.

“The Director of Public Prosecution took a decision to take that matter to Delmas, which I support. I think it would proceed without any hindrance. For us to mount a successful prosecution.”

Joe Sibanyoni And Co-Accused Face Extortion Charges

Sibanyoni and his co-accused — Mvimbi Daniel Masilela, Philemon Msiza and Bafana Sindane — are facing charges linked to alleged protection fee demands.

According to the State, the accused allegedly demanded more than R2.2 million from a local businessman between 2022 and 2025.

The group is facing charges relating to extortion and money laundering.

NPA Challenges Magistrate’s Contempt Ruling

The NPA has also lodged a complaint with the Magistrates Commission against Tuletu Tonjeni.

The complaint follows a decision by Tonjeni earlier this month to issue a warrant of arrest for prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba after finding him in contempt of court for failing to appear during bail proceedings.

At the same time, the NPA confirmed that it had filed a notice seeking leave to appeal the contempt ruling.
