Joburg Implements Emergency Water Supply Measures Amid Westbury Protests

The national government has urged residents of Westbury and Coronationville to protest peacefully while raising concerns over the ongoing water shortages. Authorities appealed to communities not to damage infrastructure during demonstrations.
This comes after furious residents took to the streets, blocking major roads with burning tyres and rocks. The protests highlight growing frustration over prolonged water disruptions that have left many households without a reliable supply.
City of Johannesburg Rolls Out Interim Measures
The City of Johannesburg has been directed to introduce short-term measures to relieve the crisis. Johannesburg Water confirmed that it is working on medium-to-long-term solutions to stabilize water levels in the reservoirs feeding the affected areas.

According to the utility, the improvement work is expected to be completed by the end of October, which should ease the pressure on supply once the systems are restored.

Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi said the state was fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and committed to long-term solutions.
“Government acknowledges the seriousness of these concerns and is working on long-term sustainable solutions to ensure a reliable water supply to the affected communities.
“We want to appeal to communities to allow these measures to be carried out without disrupting the workers, as any interference will delay the implementation,” Baloyi said.
Meanwhile, many residents remain dissatisfied with the response from law enforcement during the protests, with tensions still running high in the affected communities.
