Joburg Tightens Security As Threat Of Seven Protests Looms Ahead Of G20 Summit

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed that seven demonstrations — including protests, marches, and pickets — are scheduled to take place from Friday in the Nasrec and Sandton areas as the city prepares to host the G20 world leaders’ summit.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said extensive safety and traffic measures were already being rolled out, with the Nasrec precinct set to move into a hard lockdown on Friday afternoon.

He was providing a traffic update ahead of the landmark summit, which will be held in Africa for the first time.

Fihla noted that the Golden Highway next to the Johannesburg Expo Centre had been fully closed since Monday, with further closures expected in the coming hours.

Heightened Traffic Changes Around Nasrec for G20 Summit

“The Southern Northern portion which will be closed off from the N1 to Nasrec Road and of course then the Southern portion will be converted, this is to allow constant traffic flow.

“This is to accommodate resident of Mondeor view so that they have access of their residential area,” Fihla explained.

He added that the department was closely monitoring the situation across the city to ensure safety and stability throughout the summit.

JMPD Confirms Seven Planned Protests in Johannesburg

“But of course, we’re also keeping close eye and a lookout at any protests that might be happening within the City of Johannesburg.

“I know that starting from the 21st – that’s on Friday – tomorrow and up until Sunday, we have seven planned protests, marches and pickets within the Nasrec and Sandton area,” Fihla said.
