JMPD Warns Of Major Traffic Disruptions As Protests Planned Ahead Of G20 Summit

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has cautioned motorists to brace for significant traffic disruptions from Friday as several protests, marches, and pickets are expected across the city. The events coincide with preparations for the upcoming G20 world leaders’ summit.

According to authorities, the planned demonstrations are set to affect key routes in the Nasrec and Sandton areas, which are already under increased security and traffic management ahead of the global gathering.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said officers were monitoring all planned activities closely to ensure safety and maintain order.

“The southern northern portion, which will be closed off from the N1 to Nasrec road and of course, then the southern portion will be converted. This is to allow constant traffic flow.

“This is to accommodate residents of Ormonde View, so they have access to their residential area. But of course, we’re also keeping a close eye and a lookout at any protests that might be happening within the City of Johannesburg,” says Fihla.

Traffic Changes Expected in Nasrec and Surrounding Routes

The planned road closures are part of a broader traffic strategy that aims to keep vehicles moving despite demonstrations and summit-related congestion. The converted southern portion is intended to ensure residents in nearby communities are still able to reach their homes.

Motorists travelling through Nasrec are advised to plan ahead, allow for extra travel time, and use alternative routes where possible.

Heightened Security as G20 Preparations Intensify

With world leaders expected to begin arriving soon, security operations across Johannesburg have been scaled up. The JMPD says it will deploy additional officers to manage traffic flow, monitor protest activity, and ensure safety in affected areas.

The department also urged drivers to follow instructions from officers on duty and remain patient throughout the heightened period of activity.
