Iran To Compete In FIFA World Cup 2026 In United States, Confirms Infantino

The FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with their matches scheduled to be played in the United States.

His remarks came as FIFA’s Congress commenced in Vancouver, Canada, on Thursday, notably without representatives from Iran in attendance. The absence highlighted ongoing tensions linked to the tournament and broader geopolitical issues.

Although two Iranian officials were eligible to attend the gathering, they opted not to travel after one member of their delegation — a former affiliate of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard — was refused entry into Canada.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Participation: Iran’s Inclusion Confirmed

Infantino reiterated that Iran’s place in the expanded 2026 tournament remains unaffected, emphasising the organisation’s commitment to inclusivity despite political complications.

The tournament, set to take place across North America, will see nations from around the globe compete, with fixtures scheduled in the United States among other host countries.

Infantino Highlights Football’s Role In Uniting Divided World

Addressing delegates, Infantino stressed the unifying power of football during times of global division, particularly as the World Cup approaches.

He says, “We have to bring people together. It is my responsibility, it is our responsibility. Football unites the world, FIFA unites the world, you unite the world, we unite the world. And we always have to remember to be positive.

“We have to be smiling, we have to be happy. There are enough problems around the world; there are enough people who try to divide the world. If nobody tries to unite, what will happen to our world?”
