Ipid To Oppose Bail For Senior Officer Accused Of Assaulting Girlfriend In Front of Their Son

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has announced its intention to oppose the bail application of a senior police officer from Welkom in the Free State, who is accused of assaulting his girlfriend. The incident allegedly took place at a local tavern and later at their home.

Allegations Against The Officer

The 30-year-old woman, who is also a constable at the same police station as the accused officer, was reportedly strangled and punched in front of her nine-year-old son last Sunday.

According to Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the accused cop has already made his first court appearance and is scheduled to make a formal bail application on Friday. Suping stated that Ipid will oppose the officer’s release on bail due to the severity of the charges against him.

Sequence of Events

The accused officer allegedly went to a local tavern to fetch his girlfriend, who refused to leave with him as she was with friends. Suping explained, “The police officer allegedly dragged the complainant out of the tavern, but was stopped by other patrons.

“However, they later agreed to leave together. When they arrived at home, he (the accused) allegedly assaulted the complainant by strangling and punching her in front of her son.”

The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of law enforcement personnel and the nature of the allegations. Ipid’s decision to oppose bail underscores the seriousness with which the charges are being treated. The formal bail application is set to take place on Friday, where further details are expected to emerge.
