Community Interference Prevents Arrest Of Armed Suspects In Elsies River

The Elsies River Crime Prevention Unit faced significant resistance while attempting to arrest two armed suspects in the early evening of Tuesday, March 4th, after community members interfered, preventing the police from executing the arrest.

The suspects, who were seen fleeing the scene of a shooting in Matroosfontein, were later able to evade capture despite the police’s efforts.

Shooting Incident Leads to Attempted Arrest

According to police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, at around 7 PM, the Elsies River Crime Prevention Unit responded to reports of a shooting in Matroosfontein.

On their way to the scene, they noticed a crowd dispersing in various directions in Aland Road, Clarke Estate. Among the crowd, two suspects, armed with firearms, were spotted fleeing the area.

As police officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, local residents intervened, obstructing the officers’ actions and allowing the suspects to escape.

However, the police successfully recovered two firearms from the scene—a 9mm Glock pistol with an extended magazine containing seven rounds, an additional magazine with six rounds, and a Belgium-made 9mm pistol with its serial number removed, loaded with one round.

Community Resistance to Law Enforcement

Roderick Ourson, from the Elsies River Community Police Forum, expressed concern over the frequent interference from the community in such cases.

According to Ourson, some community members benefit from criminal activities, such as “smash and grab” incidents. “Parents and others involved are aware of their children’s criminal activities.

They receive items like phones stolen in robberies and exchange them for money, which is often spent on alcohol, drugs, or other non-essential goods,” Ourson explained.

He added that while these same individuals often call the police for help during shootings or robberies, they are reluctant to support law enforcement when it comes time to hold criminals accountable.

“It’s sickening to see people prevent the police from doing their work while expecting effective service,” said Ourson. “The community needs to take a stand by joining neighborhood watches, offering anonymous tips, and actively participating in efforts to combat local crime.”

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge for law enforcement in tackling crime in areas where community members may inadvertently support criminal behavior. Authorities urge the public to work together with law enforcement to reduce violence and crime in the community.
