Inmate’s Death At Mangaung Prison Declared Murder Amid G4S Abuse Allegations

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has launched a full-scale investigation into the unnatural death of a prison inmate at Mangaung Correctional Centre, operated by private security firm G4S.

The dead inmate, Mpho Mkhumbeni, was serving a life prison sentence for a 2014 murder conviction.

His death, now ruled a murder, has raised serious questions about private prison accountability in South Africa.

Investigation Uncovers Alleged Torture By G4S Officials

Mkhumbeni collapsed in his cell on the night of March 11, after a search operation by G4S’s Dedicated Search Team (DST) at the Wolds Unit.

He was taken to the internal hospital, where he later died.

Initial reports claimed a medical collapse, but conflicting accounts from G4S prompted the DCS to intervene.

DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that the investigation revealed shocking findings.

On the night of the search, DST officials returned to the cell, accusing inmates of stealing a backpack containing R800.

During the second visit, four inmates were allegedly interrogated, assaulted, and tortured.

A post-mortem revealed that Mkhumbeni died from blunt force trauma and complications from pepper spray exposure, leading authorities to classify the case as murder.

G4S Accused of Cover-Up, Senior Staff Remain Active

Despite the severity of the incident, only the DST officials were suspended, while G4S managers remained in their roles.

This led the DCS-appointed temporary manager to withdraw the operational certificate of the contractor’s operations director.

“The contractor failed to inform the DCS-appointed manager about the search and later attempted to conceal the events,” said Nxumalo. “G4S’s actions, and those of its employees, amount to defeating the ends of justice.”

The DCS says senior managers failed to intervene or report the assault, and their denials have been found “lacking in credibility.”

Private Prison Oversight Under Scrutiny

The DCS has confirmed that the contractor violated several concession contract obligations, including failing to maintain transparency and accountability during internal operations.

As the investigation nears completion, the DCS has vowed to take firm action against those responsible and review the broader contractual relationship with G4S.
