Authorities On High Alert After Inmate Flees Cape Town Facility

An inmate serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing has escaped from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town, the Department of Correctional Services has confirmed.
The 35-year-old fugitive, Yanga Wayithi, was part of a work team maintaining the facility’s grounds when he managed to break free.
Police and Tracking Teams Mobilised
According to department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, police have been notified, and a case of escape from lawful custody has been opened.

“The Department of Correctional Services’ tracing team is working to ensure a swift rearrest,” said Nxumalo.
Authorities have also initiated an internal investigation to uncover how Wayithi managed to escape. The findings will determine if any security breaches or negligence contributed to the incident.
As the manhunt intensifies, Nxumalo urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any sightings or suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.
