Increased Police Presence On Gauteng Highways To Combat Robberies

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has reassured residents that measures are being taken to address the recent highway robberies in the region. Following a targeted robbery on the M1 North during morning traffic, police have deployed additional officers to highway hotspots to ensure the safety of motorists.

Last month, a group of armed individuals targeted drivers on the M1 North highway near Gold Reef City, causing panic among motorists.

Social media platforms were flooded with warnings from concerned citizens, sharing images and videos of the incidents.

Prompt action was taken by law enforcement, resulting in the arrest of six suspects associated with the notorious “blue light gang” responsible for terrorizing motorists along the N3 Highway.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni confirmed the arrests and emphasised the importance of collaboration with Tracker, a vehicle tracking company, to bring these suspects to justice. He acknowledged that some of the arrested individuals may be repeat offenders, posing an ongoing concern for public safety.

To address the challenges posed by these incidents, the police have increased their presence on the N3 Highway and other affected areas. Commissioner Mthombeni highlighted the use of CCTV cameras on the N3 near De Hoek weighbridge, although he acknowledged the need to address the use of side roads by criminals.
