Imposters, Wanted Armed Robbery Suspect Apprehended During Matric Exams

The 2024 National Senior Certificate examinations, which commenced on October 21, have been accompanied by several reported incidents. Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, addressed the media regarding these occurrences during a briefing at Parliament in Cape Town.

Security Incidents During the Exams

Despite the overall smooth progress, Gwarube highlighted that some irregularities were detected, primarily involving a small number of learners. Instances of confiscated cell phones and crib notes were reported, and investigations are underway.

Moreover, there have been security incidents, including the arrest of two imposters who attempted to take exams on behalf of registered candidates, as well as a candidate arrested for alleged armed robbery.

Measures Implemented for Affected Students

So far, 104 out of the 181 question papers have been completed, signifying 58% of the total examination schedule. External issues, such as taxi strikes and adverse weather, had an impact, but contingency measures ensured that all affected students were able to complete their assessments.

Education Director General Hubert Mathanzima Mweli warned that learners found guilty of examination irregularities could face serious repercussions, including a three-year ban on future examinations.
