Illegal Miners Caught With Unpolished Diamonds In Kleinsee

A targeted operation under Operation Vala Umgodi has led to the arrest of four illegal miners and the recovery of suspected unpolished diamonds near the Koingnaas mining area outside Kleinsee, Northern Cape.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 55, were apprehended during a joint law enforcement operation on Tuesday, 15 April 2025.

The operation was launched following actionable intelligence about a vehicle allegedly transporting illegal miners and contraband from the mining zone.

A multi-disciplinary SAPS team acted swiftly, setting up observation points at strategic intersections near Komaggas, Soebatsfontein, and the Noup gate in Koingnaas.

Vehicle Intercepted And Diamonds Seized

Law enforcement successfully intercepted a white Toyota Hilux bakkie on the Koingnaas/Kleinsee road.

A thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants revealed a quantity of suspected unpolished diamonds hidden inside.

All four suspects were arrested on the scene and taken into custody for possession of unpolished diamonds.

The vehicle used in the crime was also seized as evidence.

Suspects To Appear In Springbok Court

The arrested individuals are set to appear before the Springbok Magistrate’s Court, where they will face charges relating to illegal mining and the unlawful possession of precious stones.

The diamonds will undergo expert analysis to determine their value and origin.

SAPS officials have praised the operation as part of a broader crackdown on illegal mining across hotspot areas in the Northern Cape.

They reiterated their commitment to eradicating criminal syndicates that exploit the region’s mineral wealth and damage the environment.

The South African Police Service is calling on members of the public to support the fight against illegal mining.
