Husband And Wife In Bellville Court Over Alleged Thailand Job Scam And Human Trafficking Charges

A husband and wife accused of luring young South Africans with fake overseas job offers appeared in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Monday.

Yolanda and Adam Douglas face four counts of human trafficking following their arrest by the Hawks’ Western Cape Economic Protected Resources unit on Saturday.

The pair are alleged to have recruited four victims with promises of employment in Thailand, only for them to be transported onwards and held against their will.

The matter was postponed to Thursday, 26 February, as the couple’s bail profile is still outstanding. They remain in custody and are expected to return for a formal bail application.

Bellville Magistrates Court Appearance In Alleged Thailand–Cambodia Job Scam Case

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, the charges relate to incidents dating back to 2024 and 2025.

The State alleges the couple recruited young people from the Scottsdene area in Kraaifontein, promising them work opportunities in Thailand.

“The victims would be recruited and promised free accommodation, free meals, work permits and visas where they would be paid between $450 and $500 plus a commission.

“And when they get there in Thailand, they would be transported to Cambodia, where they worked in a call centre, and then they would be asked to scam (people), making calls to South Africa.”

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siyabilele Vukubi said authorities first received information about the alleged operation in May 2025.

“When they arrive there, they are working in a call centre, but the duties that they were doing there are not the duties that they were recruited for.

“Apparently, while in Cambodia, they are calling unsuspecting victims to say that you have a case that is open against you, and that there’s a particular amount of money that you should pay to avoid the arrest,” Vukubi said.

He added that victims allegedly had their documents taken from them and were restricted in their movements.

“They also had their documents confiscated, as well as their freedom of movement, which was hindered, and they were made to work long hours.”

NPA To Oppose Bail As Accused Face Potential Life Imprisonment

Ntabazalila confirmed that the State intends to oppose bail when the matter returns to court.

He said the charges fall under Schedule 5 of the Criminal Procedure Act, meaning the accused must satisfy the court that their release would be in the interests of justice. If convicted, the couple could face life imprisonment once proceedings are finalised.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing. When asked whether additional charges may follow, Ntabazalila said it’s possible.

“We’re likely to (add more), and we’re calling for more people, if there are more people who were scammed in this fashion to come forward, so that they can assist our case,” he said.

Vukubi urged members of the public to verify overseas job offers before accepting them. “Ask the people and authorities to see if this job that I’m applying for is a legitimate job or not before you fall for that trap.

“If you suspect that the job that you’re applying for is not genuine, you should report that matter. You should report that matter because now we are dealing with this matter, where now they are falling victim to trafficking in persons.”
