Huguenot Tunnel Reopens After Bus Fire: Safety Measures And Repairs Underway

The N1’s Huguenot Tunnel was reopened early on Thursday morning, a week after a bus fire forced the closure of the vital route linking the Western Cape’s interior to Cape Town.

According to the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), the decision to reopen the tunnel came after extensive emergency repair work and thorough safety inspections. Engineers and independent specialists carried out detailed assessments before giving the all-clear.

Comprehensive Safety Checks Before Reopening

SANRAL confirmed that reopening the tunnel was only approved once all verification processes were completed. The agency said engineers had worked around the clock to restore functionality and ensure safety compliance following the incident.

The Western Cape Mobility Department spokesperson, Antoinette Fennie, said: “We’re pleased to announce that following emergency repairs and safety inspections, the Huguenot Tunnel and toll plaza were opened this morning at 6am.”

Temporary Speed Limits and Ongoing Repairs

Although the tunnel is operational again, SANRAL noted that additional permanent repair work will continue in the coming months.

Fennie urged motorists to remain cautious while driving through the tunnel and to comply with the temporary safety measures implemented for public protection.

“The speed limit is 60km/h through most of the tunnel and is reduced to 40km/h. These measures are in place until permanent repairs are completed during off-peak hours.”
