Huguenot Tunnel Remains Closed After Bus Fire Causes Major Damage On N1 Near Cape Town

Authorities have confirmed that the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 near Cape Town will remain closed following a bus fire that broke out just before midnight. The incident caused extensive structural damage, prompting an immediate shutdown for safety assessments and repairs.

Western Cape officials said all passengers were safely evacuated from the bus, with no serious injuries reported. However, a tunnel official was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

According to the Western Cape Mobility Department’s acting director of traffic law enforcement, Antoinette Fennie, the tunnel cannot be reopened until comprehensive inspections and necessary repairs are completed.

“From Worcester to Cape Town, traffic is being diverted via Wolseley, Wellington and Paarl onto the N1. From Cape Town to Worcester, please use the Paarl, Wolseley, Worcester route onto the N1,” Fennie said.

She added that the department’s teams are working to assess the extent of the damage to ensure that the tunnel can reopen safely and efficiently.

Fennie cautioned that travel times will be affected during the closure, especially during morning and evening peak hours. She advised motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and to remain patient while using alternative routes.

“From the N2, please use Villiersdorp and Grabouw onto the N1. Bainskloof Pass remains open for light motor vehicles only, and no heavy motor vehicles are permitted to use the road,” she said.

The Western Cape Mobility Department will provide updates as soon as the tunnel is deemed safe for reopening.
