Hugo Broos Makes History As Bafana Bafana Qualify For 2026 FIFA World Cup After 25 Years

History has been made! For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, Bafana Bafana have secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reigniting national pride across South Africa.

Led by coach Hugo Broos, the team cruised to a 3–0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday, sealing their qualification in emphatic fashion. The triumph marks a defining moment for South African football, which has waited patiently since 2002 for another taste of World Cup action.

Broos’ men rose above adversity to achieve this feat — and they did so in spite of the challenges presented by their own football federation.

Safa’s Costly Error Nearly Ruined South Africa’s Dream

Bafana’s qualification journey was almost derailed by a shocking administrative blunder from the South African Football Association (Safa).

In March, Teboho Mokoena was incorrectly fielded during a qualifier against Lesotho, leading FIFA to dock South Africa three points and overturn their 2–0 win into a 3–0 loss.

Instead of taking accountability, Safa announced plans to appeal the ruling, attempting to cast doubt on FIFA’s decision-making process — a move that many saw as a desperate bid to deflect blame.

The penalty saw Bafana drop to second place in Group C, behind Benin on goal difference, placing their World Cup hopes in serious jeopardy.

Nigerian Win Secures Bafana’s Fate

Heading into the final round of qualifiers, South Africa’s chances looked slim. A goalless draw against Zimbabwe and Benin’s win over Rwanda meant Broos’ side had to not only defeat Rwanda but also hope for a favourable result elsewhere.

In a dramatic twist, Nigeria defeated Benin, allowing Bafana to reclaim top spot in Group C and clinch qualification.

The result sparked celebrations across the nation, as Broos’ disciplined side overcame the odds to return South Africa to football’s biggest stage.
