Horror On N1: Five Killed In Modimolle Head-On Crash Ahead Of Easter Traffic Surge

A devastating head-on collision on the N1 highway near Modimolle in Limpopo has left five people dead. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday after a vehicle reportedly attempted a U-turn on the busy route.

Authorities confirmed that both drivers were among those killed. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where five passengers were also injured and transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The severity of the crash forced officials to temporarily shut down parts of the N1, causing disruptions along the key transport corridor.

Modimolle Crash Raises Road Safety Concerns

The deadly accident comes at a critical time, as traffic volumes on the N1 are expected to surge ahead of the Easter long weekend. Officials have warned that the influx of travellers could increase the risk of further incidents if caution is not exercised.

Limpopo remains a major destination during Easter, drawing millions of pilgrims travelling to attend religious gatherings hosted by the Zion Christian Church and the St Engenas Zion Christian Church.

Limpopo Government Urges Responsible Driving

In response to the crash, the provincial government has called on motorists to remain vigilant and prioritise safety on the roads.

Premier Phophi Ramuthuba emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, stating that road safety depends on “vigilance, discipline, and mutual respect”.

Her spokesperson, Thilivhali Muavha, said, “The premier also encouraged visitors to explore Limpopo’s diverse tourism offerings, support local businesses and experience the province’s warm hospitality while observing safety precautions.

“The Limpopo provincial government wishes all residents and visitors a peaceful, safe and spiritually enriching Easter.”
