Horror In Ormonde: Six Dead After Johannesburg Building Collapse

Six people have died following a devastating building collapse in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, as emergency crews continue search and rescue operations.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) confirmed they are responding to the incident at 6 Amethyst Business Park on Amethyst Road. Teams remain on site, prioritising rescue efforts and securing the area.

EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said the cause of the collapse has not yet been established.

“At this time, the cause of the collapse has not yet been determined. A complete assessment is being conducted and additional resources have been mobilised to support response efforts,” Khumalo said.

Officials confirm Ormonde fatalities and trapped victims

Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Mgcini Tshwaku also attended the scene, where he initially confirmed four deaths and said five people were missing.

He told media that two people were trapped, one lying on top of another, while a third victim was critically trapped.

“The leg is trapped, so they had to call a doctor so that they can check if they are going to amputate the leg or not,” Tshwaku said.

Shortly after his briefing, EMS confirmed that the death toll had risen to six. Authorities said two people were initially trapped; one has since been rescued, while three remain unaccounted for as operations continue.

Public urged to avoid the area

Emergency officials have called on members of the public to steer clear of the scene to allow rescue personnel to work without obstruction.

EMS said it will provide further updates as more details become available and investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
