Horror In KZN: Elderly Couple, Child And Caretaker Gunned Down In Esikhawini Home

A KwaZulu-Natal community has been left traumatised after four people — among them an elderly couple and a seven-year-old child — were brutally shot dead inside their home in Esikhawini on Monday night.

According to police, the tragic attack left one survivor — the child’s father — who managed to escape as gunmen opened fire. The man, still shaken, recounted the horrifying moment his son called out one of the assailants’ names before being gunned down.

“I ran out and went into the dark bushes and then into a house, where I found a group of men. I told them we were being attacked at home. I asked them to call the police. While I was with them, I could still hear the gunshots. So I think they wanted to wipe out everyone at home,” said the father.

Neighbours have since gathered outside the home, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy that has rocked the tight-knit community.

Preliminary reports suggest that four armed suspects stormed the property in the early evening. The attackers allegedly shot the elderly man outside before forcing their way inside, where they killed his bedridden partner, their young grandson, and the caretaker.

Local leaders have voiced deep concern over the rising levels of gun violence in the area. Just last month, a tenant dispute in the same community resulted in three fatal shootings — further fuelling fear among residents.

KwaZulu-Natal police are working to determine the motive behind the attack and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the killers’ arrest.

The people of Madlankala are now calling for stronger police visibility and community safety measures as the suspects remain at large.
