Department Condemns Hoër Tegniese Skool Pupils’ Behaviour

North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi labelled the incident “barbaric” and vowed that pupils who assault teachers will face serious consequences.

“This behaviour is unacceptable. We are not going to tolerate pupils who assault our teachers; they do not belong in our schools,” Motsumi said.

Department spokesperson Elias Malindi confirmed that the pupils wore overalls and balaclavas while disrupting classes on Tuesday, 19 August 2025. When a teacher attempted to intervene, they poured water on him and pelted him with paper.

Malindi said staff acted swiftly to restore order: “They responded promptly and effectively to prioritise safety, secure the premises, and remove the pupils involved.”

Suspensions and Disciplinary Action

Following an urgent meeting by the school governing body (SGB), the pupils were suspended for five days pending a formal disciplinary process. Parents were informed of the decision during a meeting on Wednesday.

“The suspension was implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all pupils and staff,” Malindi said.

MEC Motsumi instructed that the affected teachers and learners receive immediate support and added that harsher disciplinary steps will follow to deter similar incidents.
