Hillbrow Thug Jailed 15 Years For Robbing Police Officer

The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 44-year-old Oupa Johannes Dunn to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, following a violent mugging in Hillbrow.
The conviction stems from an incident that took place on 30 April 2024, when an off-duty police officer was accosted by three men while walking home from a takeaway restaurant just after midnight.
Hillbrow Robbery Turns into Shootout
The men approached from behind, pretending to stop a vehicle, before forcing the officer to the ground. One suspect pointed a firearm at him while the others stole his wallet, which contained bank cards, his police badge, and appointment card, along with his mobile phone.

Unaware that their victim was armed, the suspects tried to flee. The officer identified himself, drew his service firearm and ordered them to stop. When they ignored him, he opened fire, hitting Dunn in the waist.
Dunn attempted to hide under a stationary minibus, but the officer managed to flag down a SAPS patrol vehicle, leading to Dunn’s immediate arrest. His accomplices remain at large.
Court Slams Lack of Remorse
In aggravation, Prosecutor Thomas Ngobeni said Dunn had shown no remorse and refused to cooperate with investigators by concealing the identities of his co-accused.
The court agreed, stressing that the stolen police credentials could have been used to commit further crimes and endangered public safety.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane welcomed the sentence, saying it reflects the justice system’s zero tolerance for violent crime, particularly offences targeting law enforcement officers.
“The outcome underscores the seriousness of violent crime and the court’s commitment to protecting officers and the public,” said Mjonondwane.
