Hijacked Vehicle Crashed As Khayelitsha Cops Nab Armed Suspect

Police arrested an adult male on Tuesday morning after a hijacked vehicle crashed during a high-speed pursuit in Khayelitsha.

The incident unfolded in Town Two, where members of the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team were conducting routine patrols. Officers became suspicious of a vehicle carrying four occupants. When the driver noticed the marked police vehicle, he accelerated, sparking a chase through the area.

Gunfire During Hijacked Vehicle High-Speed 

As the pursuit intensified, one of the passengers allegedly opened fire on police officers. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a pole.

All four occupants jumped out and attempted to flee on foot. Officers managed to apprehend the driver, while the other suspects escaped and remain at large.

Police searched the crashed vehicle and recovered a 9mm pistol, several cellular telephones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects had allegedly carried out a business robbery in Lingelethu West prior to the chase.

Suspect to Appear in Court

The arrested driver is facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen property, and reckless and negligent driving.

He is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once he has been formally charged.

Police investigations are ongoing as authorities work to trace the remaining suspects.
