Two High-Ranking Councillors Released After Arrest For R500,000 Corruption Charges

Two senior councillors from the Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga have been arrested and released on R10,000 bail each after allegedly accepting a bribe of R500,000.

The released Martha Busi Hlumbani and Patrick Jerry Dijane were arrested on April 16 for allegedly receiving a R20,000 cash gratification as part of a larger bribe demand.

Luxury Vehicles Seized

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) recovered the R20,000 bribe money from the released councillors and seized two luxury vehicles used during the commission of the crime.

The investigation into the broader R500,000 bribery scheme is ongoing, with the released duo expected to make their next court appearance on June 4, 2025.

Authorities Vow To Eradicate Corruption

Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, welcomed the arrest and emphasized the organization’s commitment to eradicating corruption.

“We will at no stage allow people regardless of their positions to enrich themselves at the expense of the community,” Gerber said, warning officials that corruption will not be tolerated.
