Hero Petrol Attendant Chevaan Abrahams Raises Over R80,000 To Chase Paramedic Dream After Delivering Baby

The extraordinary actions of 21-year-old petrol attendant Chevaan Abrahams have transformed his future after South Africans rallied behind him to help fund his studies.

The Kuils River resident has now moved a step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a paramedic. His journey gained national attention after he helped deliver a baby at a Shell service station during a night shift.

Abrahams found himself in an unexpected emergency when a heavily pregnant woman arrived at the petrol station after walking from a nearby farm while in labour. With no time to get her to hospital before emergency crews arrived, he stepped in to assist. The baby boy was delivered safely on the forecourt, with Abrahams guided by paramedics over the phone.

The grateful mother later honoured the young hero by naming her newborn son Jordan Chevaan Bantam.

Speaking about the dramatic delivery, Abrahams said his priority was making sure both mother and baby remained safe while listening carefully to emergency responders.

“They gave me instructions on what to do. They asked me, ‘Can you please make sure the baby is, okay? Can you please make sure the mother is, okay?'”

As his remarkable story spread across the country, many discovered that working as a paramedic had always been his biggest ambition. However, he admitted he had almost abandoned that goal because opportunities were limited where he grew up.

“I wanted to give up on my dream to become a paramedic. Where I come from, there are not a lot of opportunities.”

Instead of giving up, the experience reignited his determination to pursue a career dedicated to helping others.

“I need to dream bigger. I want to show some young ones out there that if you still dream, there is a way that you can chase your dream.”

Chevaan Abrahams Crowdfunding Campaign Raises More Than R80,000

Chevaan Abrahams’ inspiring story prompted South Africans to take action. A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help him study towards becoming a paramedic. Since then, more than R80,000 has been raised through donations from supporters across the country.

The overwhelming response has left Abrahams deeply thankful for the generosity shown by strangers who believed in his dream.

“I’m grateful to the people of South Africa because if it wasn’t for them, I couldn’t reach a goal like this. I know there’s still a lot to come. It’s just the beginning.”

Chevaan Abrahams Recognised By MISA For Outstanding Bravery

Chevaan Abrahams has also been honoured by the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA), which praised his courage and compassion. The organisation said his actions reflected the important role fuel attendants often play within their communities. It described his response as going far beyond the responsibilities of his job.

MISA Chief Executive Officer: Operations, Martlé Keyter commended the young attendant for putting humanity first.

“Chevaan’s courage shows us that the dignity of work is not only about earning a living, but also about serving with humanity. His heroism is a powerful example of how fuel attendants contribute to the wellbeing of our communities.”

MISA further applauded Abrahams for his bravery, compassion and determination, saying his story proves that ordinary workers can make an extraordinary impact. What started as a routine shift has now become the foundation of a future centred on saving lives.
